A Very Special Memorial Day

Last year we had not planned anything “special” for Memorial Day. I had planned to catch up on some paperwork, and do some housework. We DID eat barbeque, and I took a nap. About 6:00 pm Kelly woke me and asked if I wanted to go for a walk in the park. Grudgingly, I said o.k. As we walked into the park I noticed a large American flag flapping in the breeze and late afternoon sunlight. It was beautiful! As we walked along, holding hands, we saw people of various colors and backgrounds, heard many different languages being spoken and noticed how everyone was enjoying being in the park.

My face broke into a spontaneous wide grin. So many children exploring with joy, couples on their blankets sharing intimate moments, and families enjoying time together at picnic tables. It was all very lovely. Then I started to think about how this was all possible. I turned my attention to the thoughts of the many, many brave men and women who we honor today. Those who gave their lives that this beautiful day in the park was available for all of us.

I sometime disagree with our government’s decisions (as I guess we all do). But I can never fault those who serve to keep our nation free. Thank you to all of those gave their lives and who made this day in the park a possibility.
