Ironing My Shirt Reflection

Although it is a task – a chore – I appreciate ironing my shirt. In preparing for my day I remind myself of the values I stand for and the values taught to me by my father and others.

As I iron the yoke of this shirt
I am reminded that I am ironing this shirt to work –
To provide for those who I assist

Ironing the back of this shirt
I am reminded of those who have supported me,
Who stood behind me
and played a role in my becoming who I am today.

Ironing the arms of this shirt
I reflect on my ability to move
My ability to support others – to lift up,
And to move obstacles out of the way.
I am reminded to use my arms to be of service.

Ironing the front panels of the shirt
I become aware of my pubic obligation, freely chosen
I represent myself as, and others see me as, a person of service.
I am available to others emotionally and spiritually.

Ironing the collar of the shirt
I am reminded that the final touches, the last details
Will be noticed by myself – even if not by others
Ironing the collar demonstrates a readiness to attend to details.

Ironing this shirt reminds me, that when I put it on
I am here to work – to be of service.
I represent all of those who have supported me.
I am here to be a public servant of good ethic and character.

This shirt does not have to be the most spectacular garment
But when it is well cared for, by my own hand
It is putting on the role of service to others.

Ironing this shirt reminds me of the love I have received, and strive to provide.
It reminds me of the simplicity of being prepared to do the job.
