Explore the important, intricate process of communication in this workshop for mental health professionals and coaches. Every moment of communication moves the parties toward or away from connection. Effective emotional communication involves at least five components: content (what is said), emotion (the speaker’s affect), need (the met or unmet desire of the speaker), validation (a response that affirms the speaker’s reality), and dream (an accumulation of deeply held needs and values). Participants in this workshop will learn to decrease conflict and increase clarity of communication by recognizing and using each of these elements in new, more effective ways. Discussion will include how to improve clinical communication and teach clients to use these ideas in their lives. (1.5 hour lunch break) Kelly Penrod, LCDC and Michael Winters, PhD, a married couple, are both mental health professionals in private practice in Houston. Both are trained in a variety of communication theories and integrate these theories into their personal life as well as with their clients. They have presented workshops at the Jung Center, at other locations in Houston and in the US and Canada.

Michael Winters is a Psychologist in Houston focusing on marriage counseling and therapy. Michael received his PhD from the University of Memphis and has been practicing since 1991.
